ALDUB Nation does it again. Having already gathered a whopping 25.6 million tweets in a previous episode, Philippine noontime show Eat Bulaga made a better record this time around. Tweets for the hashtag #ALDubEBTamangPanahon reached 39.4 million during the airing of the show in October 22, 2015, breaking world records in the process. The show aired live in the Philippine Arena where allegedly 55,000 were in attendance.
ALDUB is a term coined by fans for the accidental love team between actor Alden Richards and Dubsmash queen Maine Mendoza, also known as Yaya Dub. The two characters are mainstays of the show Eat Bulaga, where their love story is being followed by fans in the Philippines.
As reference, the previous world records for the most number of tweets were from a Super Bowl event in the US and a World Cup soccer game. Both events are international in reach which is the reason they got so much attention on Twitter. #ALDubEBTamangPanahon, on the other hand, is a Philippine phenomenon, and not sports-related at all.
The Eat Bulaga episode that aired on October 22, 2015 was something unique on Philippine TV as it aired the show non-stop, with no interruptions for commercials. Although small ads were flashing on screen while the show was airing, it’s still better than having to go through full TV ads. Maybe this is something other TV channels can also do in the future.
