Not everyone is into huge phones. Manufacturers are in an apparent race to make the biggest phone that feature bleeding edge mobile technology. It has worked for a while and could still work moving forward. However, there is a chunk of smartphone users that still prefer the smaller ones, those ones that can be operated using only one hand. This is likely one of the reasons iPhones are still popular.
Samsung and HTC has made “mini” versions of their flagships. They came up with the Galaxy S4 Mini and the HTC One Mini. The problem with these smaller versions is the watered down specs. They are not simply smaller versions of the flagships, they are inferior versions.
Sony Xperia Z1 Compact
Sony just announced a smaller version of its flagship Xperia Z1 and the good news is, Sony did not make an inferior “mini” phone. It has retained the specs and features that make the Xperia Z1 a great Android device, and in one important aspect, it has actually been improved.
The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact packs a 4.3-inch display, a more pocketable size compared to the 5-inch Xperia Z1. Despite the smaller display, however, it still has the same great unibody design of the bigger phone, and is also waterproof. It still features a 2.2GHz of Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor, NFC, 16GB of onboard memory with microSD expansion slot and 20.7-megapixel main camera. The display has actually been improved as it is now the IPS type. With this display, viewing angles should be improved, which is one of the few complaints people have about the Xperia Z1.
However, the resolution has been reduced from full HD to 720p, but it should be okay since the difference is almost unnoticeable. The battery has also been reduced. This will not have a tremendous impact on performance as the smaller screen requires less power anyway.
Pink Xperia Z1 Compact
The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact will be available in February. The pricing has not been revealed yet but it is expected to be cheaper than the original Xperia Z1. There is no pricing or release details yet for the Philippine market but we should hear about these details soon. If I may hazard a guess as to the Xperia Z1 Compact’s pricing in the Philippines, it should be anywhere from Php26,000 to Php 28,000.
